To many, the phrase “family business” connotes a small operation with a local focus. While plenty of businesses certainly fit that description, it doesn’t reflect the powerful role that family-run businesses play in the world economy. Crieff Hydro, Scotland’s leading leisure resort and the oldest trading registered company in Scotland, has been in Stephen Leckie’s family for over 140 years. Stephen worked in the hotel from an early age, gaining experience in all areas of the business and learned about all the demands that come with running a large hotel. His hard work and experience paid off: at the age of 25 he became the youngest General Manager to be appointed for Queens Moat House Hotels.
Since taking the helm in 1994, Stephen, Chief Executive of Crieff Hydro Limited, has marshalled more than £40 million of investment to transform the property into a true leisure resort which competes on the international stage. In 2014 Stephen led the biggest change in the history of the business – the expansion of the Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels. The group now includes ten properties, has more than 750 bedrooms, 1,200 staff and a group turnover of over £30 million.
Join us on this unique Company Visit at one of the hotels from the Crieff Hydro family – Peebles Hydro. Explore this hotel located in the heart of the borders, before joining Stephen for dinner to hear how he has grown the family business from one property to ten in three years. This is a fantastic chance for our family business members to hear from someone who has shown that, with ambition and the right support behind them, family businesses can grow and scale.
