Summit 2018: McGowan Marketing - My Journey
I’ve worked really hard to establish the business; you can never underestimate the amount of work and time it takes to get your business idea off the ground...
Hello, I am Emily McGowan, a Chartered Marketer and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing with approximately 20 years’ experience and I run McGowan Marketing.
Looking back I’ve always had a passion for entrepreneurship. Just ask my mother who caught me – aged eight – selling our garden rhubarb door-to-door in the neighbourhood. By 16-years-old, I had progressed from selling sweets to my secondary school friends, to running my own Sunday market stall.
So it’s no surprise that I now run my own marketing services business, McGowan Marketing, from my base at Ettrick Riverside. It’s what I love best and I still have a passion for the profession years after I gained my Marketing degree.
After establishing my latest venture last April, I quickly realised that running a business is a bit like Christmas. It’s better when you are not alone. So my mother, who’d recently taken early retirement from her job, joined me, followed by my daughter who fancied following in my footsteps.
McGowan Marketing is now made up of three generations of strong-minded women and it’s been fantastic to see how positively our clients respond to our company/family dynamic. I guess it is part of our USP. Many of our clients are family run businesses and they love that we really understand their needs and the challenges that they face.
I’ve worked really hard to establish the business; you can never underestimate the amount of work and time it takes to get your business idea off the ground. There’s really no substitute for hard work and lots of planning – this sounds obvious, but it’s true.
If I had any other tips for would-be entrepreneurs, I’d recommend that you always look outside your business to gain inspiration and facilitate on-going personal development. It definitely pays to be a listener and we make an effort to hear what our business leaders are saying. Learning from others, who’ve been there before, is extremely valuable.
Being an entrepreneur can be tough at times, but I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I’m looking forward to growing McGowan Marketing and its client base. I get enormous satisfaction from helping our clients achieve their business goals – while doing a job I really love.
