Mike first appeared on BBC’s The Apprentice in 2011 as part of a task featuring Shortlist Media. He has since featured as one of Lord Sugar’s advisors in the interview episodes of the eight seasons since.
Mike was co-founder of Shortlist Media Ltd, the market-leading premium, free magazine publisher. As Chief Executive, Mike led the business to dramatic growth from a five-strong start-up in 2007 to a multi-award-winning enterprise over the next nine years, employing over 180 staff and reaching revenues in excess of £25m per annum. In 2016, Mike led the sale of the business and served as non-executive Chairman.
Over a 30-year career, Mike Soutar has worked in a variety of media companies in the UK and abroad as an Editor, Publisher and Broadcaster in print, digital, radio and TV. Mike’s first job was at DC Thomson in his native Dundee, writing horoscopes and beauty tips. He first rose to prominence as the Editor of Smash Hits magazine and went on to edit FHM in the UK (taking it from 50,000 copy sales a month to over 500,000) and Maxim in America. He also worked in radio, running Kiss FM in London, and served on the Board of IPC for six years, then Britain’s largest publishing company.
Mike is a Board member of IPSO, the independent press regulator for British newspapers and magazines. He consults widely for large companies and mentors and invests in start-ups.
