Without this internship I might not have had the opportunity to experience a workplace like the one I was in and I definitely wouldn’t have spent my summer living in California. The networking potential should not be overlooked, and I honestly believe that I would not have had the same opportunities for such rapid personal and professional growth that are now open to me
A Saltire Scholar internship is unique in the fact that it is so Scholar focused; where the growth, improvement and overall wellbeing of the Scholar is paramount. Even after the internship finishes, being a Saltire Alumni is so beneficial and the support provided is what makes the internship so amazing and distinctive.
It was a busy 11 weeks, but I left feeling a strong sense of accomplishment as I know the work I put in will be used by the company and will play a part in their subsequent growth.
Working for a company that was in start-up mode gave me a strong insight into all the processes behind building a business, many of which I was not aware of. I found that the research skills developed throughout my three years at Aberdeen University came in great use this summer, as much of the work I did was research on various aspects
This was an invaluable opportunity to talk to, and learn from, these individuals and to take their advice and knowledge on board to become a better version of myself. Working in another country also opens your eyes to different ways of doing things, allowing you to increase your “toolbox” so you become a more effective problem solver.
A Saltire Scholar internship is incredibly unique in what it offers - no other programme provides the chance to gain international experience, in such a diverse range of workplace environments, and with such generous support.
A big accomplishment for me is doing a Town Hall, which is a talk for everyone in the company in the London office. I was really put out of my comfort zone but delivered a good presentation and even got a few laughs which really made me feel confident in my abilities.
There’s nothing greater than being a Saltire Scholar. The programme believes you can do amazing things and this internship is just the start of a fantastic journey into the working world.
I have become more confident in sharing my ideas and suggestions with more experienced people. This was probably one of my most important personal accomplishments. I have also met many great and experienced people who've taught me so much! I believe these relationships go beyond just a summer internship.
It’s a fantastic growth experience both personally and professionally as you’ll be faced with several challenges (big or small) and will have to find ways to overcome them. But once you reflect back, you’ll undoubtedly be proud of how far you have come!
Through the Saltire Scholar Programme I have had the chance to meet some extremely successful entrepreneurs who are Saltire Alumni. It is these connections that I believe are the most valuable aspect of becoming a Saltire Scholar, not to mention being surrounded by over one hundred other like-minded students who are all wanting to make an impact in the world.
A Saltire Scholar internship is a unique experience, because the work you do is actually valued by the company you work for. I didn’t know how important that was until I saw different parts of my project implemented and rolled out. The pride and ownership I felt towards my own work was enhanced by my host company valuing my contribution. This has increased my self-esteem and makes me excited about my professional future
I grew immensely in confidence. Being in a new environment, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, often forced me to put myself outside my comfort zone, which helped me grow as a person. I learnt so much about the energy industry and grew my professional network.
If not for my Saltire internship, I wouldn’t have been able to approach my final year at University with as much confidence as I have done after this summer.
Saltire Scholar internships are unique because they are not the traditional internships which require you to make coffee for everyone, but gaining and working within a real-world environment on an important project. Also, once finishing your internship you have access to the Saltire Alumni network with people who all have a similar mindset and goals for Scotland.
The support of the University Careers Service was fundamental throughout the application process, starting from the initial application sessions, giving tips on how to answer competency based questions, to the face-to-face meetings with career advisors, who were always there to offer valuable advice.
Without The Saltire Scholar Programme, an opportunity like this wouldn't even be fathomable, let alone possible.
Networking whilst in New York was eye opening for me. I got to speak with some big players in the office and industry; including the CEO, VP of Finance and the VP of Marketing, as well as chat to them about career paths, the responsibility of their title and innovation within the industry.
One of the main areas I developed over the summer was my scientific skillset. I gained a host of lab experience, being exposed to different scientific techniques, working independently, interpreting my own results and thinking critically as to their meaning and how to proceed.
To anyone considering taking part in the programme next year I’d say go for it! You’re going to gain some invaluable experience, meet some amazing individuals and make friends for life!

My biggest achievement is that, at the end of the internship, my host company offered me a Marketing Analyst position with a one-year contract. The Saltire Scholar Internship Programme has given me much more than just an internship and a job as now I am part of a network that supports me in being the best I can be.
I think that the best reward for my work was my manager’s feedback. She informed me that, if there was any opening in the Marketing department, she would definitely hire me! I felt extremely honoured and motivated to keep working even harder on my career development.
My highlights include developing a new accommodation type for the hotel, market analysis on potential new locations and looking at how they could reduce their waste. The great thing about the company was that every task I took out was utilised by the departments having real impact. My biggest accomplishment was building a strategic vision and staffing plan for the refugee foundation Movement on the Ground. This will be used in a period of critical growth for the organisation.
This internship offered me the ability to learn not just how the company operates across Australia but also how it interacts with its divisional subsidiaries across Europe and North America. This is key to my International Business Management studies at University. What I learned here will stand me in good stead for my final year degree studies but more especially in my future career.
If not for my Saltire internship, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
