Saltire Scholars Kick Off 2024 Programme

Entrepreneurial Scotland’s flagship initiative, the Saltire Scholars Programme, welcomed Saltire Scholars, Alumni and special guests at The Social Hub in Glasgow to officially kick start the 2024 Programme.

The event welcomed some of the close to 200 Saltire Scholars ready to embark on a summer of a lifetime, as they intern across the world including roles in Australia, Canada, the USA, Scotland and the wider UK. The event celebrated all their achievements ahead of their internships after completing months of personal development through our assessment centre and application process.

As part of the event, the 2024 Saltire Scholars cohort heard from some Saltire Scholar Alumni from the programme's 17-year history, who shared insightful stories, lessons and tips for the future.

Christopher Gordon, a 2008 Saltire Scholar, shared how his internship with Wood Group led to a 14+ year-long career with his host company, and how much the programme changed his life:

“Being a Saltire Scholar was life-changing for me. I was exposed to new industries, new cultures, new colleagues, new business, new everything. The programme put me in a new environment that challenged me, nurtured me, and prepared me to take bold steps.”

Christopher was also joined by a panel of alumni, Dylan Macdonald (2016 Saltire Scholar), Sophie Khan (2022 Saltire Scholar) and Eva Millar (2023 Saltire Scholar) who shared insights on their experiences and how joining has impacted their self-confidence, motivations, and career trajectory.

The event allowed the 2024 Saltire Scholars to celebrate the summer ahead through an evening of networking and connection-building with their new cohort and special guests.

One noteworthy guest was David Young, President of Saltire Foundation USA, who leads the organisation helping to connect Scotland’s students with fully funded internship opportunities in the United States. David’s presence underscored the importance of the programme for offering international opportunities and bridging the cultural exchange between Scotland and the rest of the world.

“This programme allows Scottish students the chance to show their skills in an international environment and experience different cultural aspects of doing business in different places around the world.

The programme instils a confidence in students that they can bring back to Scotland, where they can have a different view of themselves and their future careers as they plan forward.”

We want to thank all our donors, Host Company Partners, University Partners, and wider supporters for helping us deliver such a transformational programme each year. We can’t wait to see the impact the programme will have on this year’s Saltire Scholars.
