Arthur Halsall, Business Development Research and Data Analyst Intern, FOR:EV

Arthur, a Sustainable Development Student from the University of Edinburgh, shares his experience as a Business DEvelopment Research and Data Analyst Intern with FOR:EV.

Initial Reflection

This summer, I am interning with FOR:EV, an exciting company specializing in implementing electrical vehicle charging infrastructure across Scotland and the rest of the UK. As I embark on this journey, my main project focus so far has been to identify and explore potential leads for the company. The company has recently pivoted their business model and so the tasks at hand have been full of excitement and driven by renewed purpose.

My role involves comprehensive market research, data analysis, and strategic outreach to potential partners and customers. My initial thoughts on the project were a mix of excitement and apprehension. The chance to contribute to a sustainable future by promoting electric vehicle adoption aligns perfectly with my values, but the responsibility of identifying key growth opportunities was daunting.

One of my primary personal goals throughout this internship is to deepen my understanding of the clean energy sector. Professionally, I aim to develop my analytical and strategic planning skills, crucial for success in any business environment. I am also eager to build a robust professional network, both within FOR:EV and the broader industry. This network will be invaluable as I continue my career journey, providing insights, guidance, and opportunities.

Settling into my new role and the company environment has been rather seamless, thanks largely to the warm welcome from those in the office. From day one, I was impressed by the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability, as well as the relatively flat structure - making me feel comfortable in expressing my opinion. The open-door policy here has made it easy to ask questions and seek guidance, which has been instrumental in my smooth transition.

Meeting and collaborating with team members has been one of the highlights of my internship so far. The team at FOR:EV is composed of diverse professionals with a wealth of experience and expertise in both the public and private sector. Through team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and informal chats, I have learned about project management, customer engagement strategies, and the technical aspects of our products. This collaborative environment has fostered a sense of camaraderie and has been a source of motivation and inspiration.

Of course, the first few weeks have not been without their challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was adjusting to a new work environment and the logistics of daily commute. Navigating a new place can be overwhelming, but I have managed to overcome this by establishing a routine. Starting a new role always comes with a steep learning curve, and this was no different. The technical jargon and industry-specific knowledge required for my project were initially intimidating, especially the many acronyms used by my colleagues. However, by dedicating extra time to study and leveraging the expertise of my colleagues, I have been able to get up to speed.

In conclusion, my first few weeks at FOR:EV have been a period of immense growth and learning. The challenging yet rewarding nature of the work, combined with the supportive company culture and the opportunity to collaborate with talented professionals, has made this experience immensely refreshing. I look forward to continuing my journey, thank you Saltire!

Final Reflection

When I first applied to the Saltire Programmes, I could never have anticipated the profound impact this experience would have on my personal and professional growth. Being offered the chance to spend 12 weeks in Edinburgh working at FOREV, a pioneering EV charging company, felt like the perfect alignment with my passion for sustainability and innovation.

Throughout my 12 weeks at FOREV, I had the unique opportunity to delve deep into the rapidly evolving world of EV charging infrastructure - a relatively nascent industry. My role as a Business Development and data analyst Intern allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the company’s mission of expanding Scotland’s EV charging network. This role seamlessly integrated my interests in sustainability, technology, and strategic planning. I was entrusted with projects that spanned market analysis, customer engagement, and operational efficiency, providing me with a well-rounded understanding of the industry.

As a fast paced startup FOREV offered many ways to bring my skills to the business. I was able to work closely with departments ranging from operations to marketing, gaining insights into how a leading company operates in a fast-paced industry. This exposure not only sharpened my professional skills but also deepened my understanding of the significant role that renewable energy plays in our future.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned at FOREV was the importance of adaptability and proactive problem-solving. The EV industry is rapidly changing, and being part of a company at the forefront of this movement taught me how to thrive in an environment where innovation is key. I witnessed firsthand the impact of empowering leadership and collaboration, qualities that have undoubtedly shaped my approach to work.

I wholeheartedly encourage anyone considering this programme to seize the opportunity. Although the application process can be challenging, it is clear that the Saltire Programmes and Entrepreneurial Scotland are committed to the success and development of their candidates. I am immensely grateful to my university's career service for their support during the application process and to the Saltire team for making this journey possible. Their guidance and encouragement throughout my internship were invaluable.

As my 12-week internship at FOREV comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve had. This experience has not only solidified my career aspirations but has also given me the confidence to pursue them with renewed vigor. I am proud to have been a Saltire Scholar in 2024, and I look forward to what the future holds.
