New York had always been that elusive dream for me. It felt like something out of a movie, a destination I longed to visit for as long as I can remember. Little did I know that this summer would turn that dream into a reality.
When I got the life- changing news back in May, I was left utterly speechless. Interning in the heart of the Big Apple was beyond my wildest expectations. All the hard work I'd put in since last September suddenly made sense – it had paid off in the most incredible way.
This summer has been one for the books. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Entrepreneurial Scotland for this mind-blowing opportunity. The internship at That's Nice LLC, a science agency specializing in research-driven marketing and consulting for life sciences companies, was nothing short of amazing.
Imagine this: I got to experience the perfect balance between being a dedicated intern during the week, soaking up professional experience, and being a full-time tourist on the weekends, exploring every nook and cranny of NYC.
My host company were like family from day one. Even though it was a small team, I got to know everyone personally. Their warm welcome, New York recommendations, and those weekly company lunches made it feel like I was part of something special. My supervisors were beyond wonderful – kind, supportive, and always ready to lend a hand, and I am so grateful to have worked with them this summer and for the friendships we've forged.
As part of the research team, I contributed to some major projects like Cell and Gene Therapy, API, Monoclonal Antibody, and Recombinant Protein reports, to name a few, and I also carried out various group projects involving competitor research and even presented my findings, it was a daunting but amazing experience! Not to mention, I dove headfirst into the world of pharma and biotech, learning the ins and outs of mergers, acquisitions, CDMOs, CROs, venture capitals, private equities – you name it. I'm walking away from this experience with newfound confidence, better initiative-taking skills, top-notch time management, and super-effective communication skills.
But the adventure didn't stop at work. I had the pleasure of sharing my accommodation with three incredible fellow Saltire Scholars, and let me tell you, the weekends in the city were legendary. The nightlife in New York? Unmatched. Even just chilling in our apartment after a long day at work was something to look forward to.
New York, though, is on a whole other level. It's magical, plain and simple. Every morning, riding the subway to work, I felt like anything was possible. As cliche as this sounds, I truly felt like I was in the plane where dreams are made of. Also, my company's location had a killer bonus – I got to see the Empire State Building every single day during my walk to work (attached a pic for proof)!
New York's culinary scene is legendary beyond belief and worth every bit of hype. Eating out became my favorite hobby, hands down. Those New York-style pizza slices and bagels? I crave them every single day, without fail. And let's not forget about fast food – Chipotle, Shake Shack, Popeyes – they're all must-tries.
New York's constant buzz meant there was always something to do. I never had a dull moment. It truly lives up to the "city that never sleeps" reputation.
My summer highlights included a Barbie movie at a skyline drive-in in Brooklyn, going to my first-ever comedy show, riding the Staten Island Ferry with a front-row seat to the Statue of Liberty, going to Point Pleasant beach in New Jersey, visiting the Bronx Zoo (one of the biggest zoos in the USA), attending a free concert in Central Park, a day trip to Boston and SO much more.
I absolutely cannot recommend this program enough, it truly changed my life and this is only the beginning. If you are considering applying, do not hesitate!
