Dylan Crawford, IT Support Intern, Rabbie's Trail Burners

I have been partaking in an IT Support Engineer internship with Rabbie’s Trail Burners Ltd, who are mostly known for their fantastic tours of various places around Europe. As I am a cyber security student, the internship has been slightly tailored for myself as the company is looking to bolster its cyber security posture. I am to look at the risk factors associated with company procedures when it comes to physical security and cyber security. I also observe potentially malicious emails that were sent to employees, set up laptops for new employees, deal with account issues, CCTV checks, general computer issues, and much more! I am quite optimistic about doing the project as I enjoy consulting people on the best way forward to information security resilience.

My goals of the internship are to improve my social skills in the workplace, gain work experience that is in my field which this internship does well, and to form some new connections in the information technology industry. I also want to gain a real understanding of how a company operates its computer infrastructure and how its security can be interpreted and improved in a way that works for business. I’d say this is going very well so far.

My progress in settling into the company and the role has been successful. I have made a fair few friends who are either interns from the Scholarship or already working at the company. I talk to the majority of them mostly during lunchtime and I have another IT Support Engineer helping me learn the company’s procedures. I have been working with other IT department staff on investigating issues regarding user accounts, networked services, and hardware. It’s been of great benefit to me as they show me how they typically operate using a ticketing system and how to operate various background administrative systems which get used by all types of companies for their IT solutions.

So far, I haven’t faced a lot of challenges. Travel is quite comfortable as it is similar to how I commute to university and there was an excellent tour of the office which clearly outlined where resources are located and asking a colleague is very easy to do due to how friendly they are.

I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the summer to continue to broaden my horizons and get the most out of my internship and this experience.
