My name is Sometheadevi and I graduated this summer from the University of Stirling with a degree in Finance and Investment. I applied to the Saltire Scholars Programme to put my theoretical studies into practice and gain hands-on experience in Scotland’s finance industry. I first discovered this opportunity through my university’s career platform. What stood out to me was not only its role in supporting early career transitions, but also its straightforward assessment process, which provides students with access to a wide range of firms and internships. For example, I had heard how challenging it is to enter private equity, so I never expected my first work experience to be with a firm operating in a PE style!
Through Saltire, I secured a role at Turner & Co. as a Research and Investment Analyst, focusing on an industry in the UK and contributing to a buy-and-build strategy. The role related directly to my degree, but it also revealed how much more there is to M&A research, deal analysis, and B2B communication than what is taught in school. I contributed to the company’s work by analysing both macroeconomic and microeconomic trends. While the start was overwhelming, support from both my host company and the Saltire team allowed me to make the most of the experience and improve quickly.
The most rewarding aspect was learning how to present large datasets clearly and seeing how my research could highlight whether an industry was worth investing in. The project strengthened my technical skills, particularly in data management and analysis, by examining hundreds of companies to identify trends. I also gained exposure to new financial data platforms, enhancing my adaptability and building transferable skills for future roles. Another highlight was attending meetings with other firms, which gave me a clear view of professional B2B communication; it was very different from what I had imagined! Over the course of the internship, I not only developed technical expertise but also grew personally: becoming more confident, more willing to ask for help, and more curious.
I highly recommend the Saltire Scholars Programme to anyone seeking a smooth transition into their career. The process can feel daunting, but the support and guidance provided throughout the internship made it a comfortable and rewarding experience!!
