Ishbel Dow, Regulatory Control Intern, Barclays

This summer, I’m interning with Barclays in Operations Regulatory Control (ORC). During my time at Barclays, I will assist in ensuring the firm operates in accordance with regulatory rules, particularly those related to protecting client money and assets (CASS). My main work will involve supporting wider strategic projects for either CASS or Transaction Reporting, ensuring compliance with FCA requirements. I look forward to working in these areas over the next 8 weeks as it offers a unique opportunity to explore regulatory compliance, a crucial area that safeguards client interests and maintains the firm's integrity.

My main personal goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of regulatory operations within a leading financial institution. Professionally, I aim to develop my analytical and problem-solving skills, and improve my communication and networking skills. By the end of the internship, I hope to have contributed to the team’s efforts in maintaining compliance, assist in the transaction reporting process and to have built strong relationships with my colleagues.

Settling into my new role at Barclays has been a smooth experience, thanks to the welcoming and supportive environment within the ORC team. I have already had the chance to meet and collaborate with team members both within and outside my department. Those within the ORC team have been crucial in showing me their roles and responsibilities, while colleagues from other areas, such as wealth management, have provided valuable insights into different areas of the bank. These interactions have been immensely beneficial, offering me diverse perspectives on regulatory compliance and enhancing my understanding of how various functions within the firm interconnect.
