Kathleen Jarvis, Culinary and Food Product Development Intern, Sprouts Farmers Market

This has so far been the best experience of my life; I have learned so much being with the culinary team, learning all about the culinary process by starting my solo project. I have been tasked with developing a turkey sandwich for the MTO station at Sprouts. This required me to brainstorm ideas, gaining insight by looking into what Sprouts competitors are doing, researching restaurant inspiration, and looking into current sandwich trends.

The past couple of weeks I have been using a new software to me, Nutritics, where product costs and nutrient information which was a crucial aspect of completing my project. I also used Nutritics to complete weekly cost updates, which I received from other departments including the meat and deli team at sprouts. I used Excel software to organise the cost updates which boosted my IT skills, I also gained some business-appropriate communication skills through sending cost updates to the appropriate departments.

I was excited to receive my official vendor badge and my chef coat! Really made me feel like a part of the culinary team. One thing I love about being an intern at Sprouts is i feel like a valued team member, everyone treats me like a member of the team and not just someone that is here to learn for a brief period of time.

During my 12 weeks I developed many skills including; business-appropriate communication, leadership, culinary, excel and word software. It’s exciting to say I developed something from scratch that will end up selling in stores across the states! In the last week of my internship I was given the opportunity to present my internship experience to the CEO of Sprouts.
