I am interning at Stop and Shop in Boston, USA! My role is Marketing intern where I have the pleasure of working for the wider marketing team in the corporate office. From community and charity events, to brand activations and sports partnerships, the marketing team work to support the local community and improve their brand experience. So far, I have worked at 3 events in Boston and Rhode Island. I’ve compiled data into presentation formats and I’ve started my project. My project is to present a plan for a community event, detailing how I would coordinate and execute it and the impact it would have. Over the rest of time alongside working on my project I will continue to attend and work at various events in the New England.
I find this project really exciting as it has and will continue to engage me with the community that Stop and Shop serves whilst simultaneously sharing the copious functions of marketing. I have already pulled together a starting point and I have found all the various marketing teams very helpful in their suggestions and support. As my role is largely attending and helping events, this project will provide me with a fuller understanding as I research and plan a new event myself. I will gain insight into both the work and impact of community marketing efforts.
Over the course of this internship I hope to make a positive and memorable impact at Stop and Shop. There is so much to learn by being immersed in such a fantastic and welcoming professional team and I want to soak up as much information as possible to propel my professional skills within and beyond marketing. I aim to speak to all the different teams at Stop and Shop so I can gain a wider understanding of how the corporate office runs. Personally, I hope to enjoy the whole experience to drive me to chase opportunities at home in Scotland. I hope it emboldens me and raises my confidence so that when those opportunities appear I don’t shy away.
Stop and Shop have been fantastically welcoming. Everyone in the office has made an effort to introduce themselves and I have settled into my role and the environment very quickly. They encourage any and all questions and working alongside 5 other Saltire Scholars has made it especially easy to find my footing. The company has organised various meetings and events in the office which provide us the chance to meet other people in the office and everyone is so excited to have saltire scholars interning with them!
Within my first two weeks, I have learnt about all the different facets of marketing. For example, the Stop and Shop grand opening in Allston on the 21st is a very important event the team has been working towards and whilst I haven’t contributed to that being able to attend two meetings so far leading up to the opening has strengthened my understanding. My first event was the Red Bull cliff diving which was a fantastic experience and I got to engage with the community first hand!
I was initially a bit nervous about getting around the city on the public transport as Boston is so big and my commute is an hour and two different trains, but downloading Citymapper makes it so easy! Jet lag was also a slight struggle the first few days but if you keep yourself busy you’ll be fine!
