I’m Mahi, a recent MA Politics (Honours) graduate from the University of Glasgow. This summer, I was a Marketing intern at YourShortlist® – a tech consultancy company based in Glasgow. I applied to the Saltire Scholars programme after my best friend recommended it to me. Upon researching, I was intrigued by the variety of roles offered and the focus on developing employability skills. I knew that being a Saltire Scholar was more than just getting employed; it was about gaining crucial, long-lasting personal and professional skills that will prepare me for future job opportunities.
This internship was really special because I was recruited during an exciting chapter for the company. As they are currently rebranding, my primary project was to help create new company assets and social media posts and continue working on launching Linkedin campaigns. Additional responsibilities included designing presentations, handling marketing emails, and creating downloadable guides for the company’s Partners and Members.
What drew me to apply for this Marketing position was my experience with student associations and my passion for content creation. As a Politics student, there were lots of learnings to take from this internship, both personal and professional/hard skills, that I could implement in my future career working in international organisations or for NGOs.
Through this internship, I contributed to a real-world project with crucial implications for the company! By creating new, original content, I got to work for real clients and businesses looking to upgrade their business technology. I created tangible assets such as a staging website for the new company, Linkedin ads, and social media posts. In doing so, I learnt how to keep track of engagement and metrics to ensure that people kept engaging with our company and its services. I also got to work with an external design agency to brainstorm new graphics for the company, allowing me to collaborate with others. I learnt how to use new software like Adobe InDesign, Reach Boost, and Wordpress in addition to using my previous experience with Canva and Capcut. I will definitely miss having Canva and Capcut Pro, they genuinely make designing so much more fun!
Moreover, I learnt how to balance work and personal time and fixed my sleep schedule! (Minus sleeping in over the weekend). The first week took some adjusting. By Week 3, I had opened up a lot more to my co-workers, which was definitely made a lot easier by the supportive, positive work environment. All the different teams, from sales to IT to BD, welcomed us and always assured us that we can reach out to them to ask questions. Through this, I became more confident in my ability to work with other people, start discussions, and provide feedback on ongoing projects.
One of the most fun bits about this experience was organising the Saltire Scholars fundraiser with the team. We hosted a games afternoon where we played ‘Blood on the Clocktower’, a Mafia/werewolf/traitors-inspired game where the good team must eliminate the evil team to win. It was really nice to see others in the office being equally excited about the game as us, even coming into the office on Friday (WFH day) to play the game. We also hosted a Bake Sale and discovered that we have some exceptional bakers on our team!
This experience definitely transformed me professionally, teaching me important technical skills and developing my leadership skills. The experience definitely met my expectations, and I had a really productive summer in Glasgow working with dedicated, enthusiastic people. I have now realised that an internship is not only about doing tasks but also about sitting and learning different things.
Lastly, I want to give a shoutout to my co-interns, Aaron and Divya. They made coming into the office a lot less scary and more memorable. I will miss all the GIF spams on our Teams chats; thank you for a lovely time! ❤️
