My Experience as a Marketing and Communications Intern

When I first came across the Saltire Scholars Programme, it was only two days before the application deadline. I'd never heard of it before, and I submitted my application with very little idea of what to expect.

Like many applicants, I was nervous about the assessment centre. It was far less daunting than I'd imagined. Throughout the entire process, the Saltire team were incredibly supportive, always happy to answer questions and offer reassurance. Their encouragement made a huge difference, and when I eventually received the call to say I'd been successful, I was absolutely delighted. (A special thank you to Cheryl for going above and beyond to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible.)

In late June, I started my 10-week internship with Resolute Photonics as their Marketing and Communications Intern. From my first day, everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome and valued.

I'll admit that the first few weeks were slightly overwhelming. Coming from a non-engineering background, I knew very little about photonics and wasn't sure how quickly I'd be able to get up to speed. However, the team were incredibly supportive and always willing to explain concepts, answer questions, and help me understand the industry.

Over the summer, I've had the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of projects focused on increasing Resolute Photonics' visibility and strengthening its external communications. This has included developing website content, creating LinkedIn campaigns, and helping redesign the company's presentation materials.

One of the most valuable aspects of my internship has been the exposure to the wider business. I've had the chance to attend senior management meetings, gaining an insight into strategic decision-making, business development, and how the company communicates with investors, partners, and operates globally.

A particular highlight was leading a company-wide workshop to help define Resolute Photonics' values and ethos. Facilitating discussions with colleagues across the business was a fantastic opportunity and gave me valuable experience in stakeholder engagement and internal communications.

I've also had the opportunity to work closely with the CEO throughout the internship. Learning directly from someone leading a growing technology company has provided insights and experiences that I would never have anticipated.

For anyone considering applying to Saltire Scholars next year, my advice is simple: go for it. You never know where the opportunity might lead, and it could end up being one of the most rewarding experiences of your university journey.
