My Summer as a Law Student at Faculty of Advocates

Hi, my name is Ciara, and at the beginning of my fourth year studying Scots Law at the University of Dundee, I applied to the Saltire Scholars Programme. Like many final-year students, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do after graduation. I submitted my application in hope that the experience would help me develop valuable skills and maybe even provide more clarity about my future - and it absolutely did!

Going through the application process—completing the application form, attending an assessment centre, and eventually interviewing with a host company—was incredibly worthwhile. It gave me first-hand experience of what real recruitment processes are like and helped me build professional confidence I didn’t have before.

Thankfully, my journey didn’t stop there. I was so excited to be offered a 12-week internship with the Dean’s Secretariat Department at the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh. In my role as a Record Management and Archives Intern, I led a large-scale digitalisation project aimed at modernising archived documents. This project significantly enhanced my organisational skills as I was responsible for reviewing, evaluating and maintaining an online filing system while handling sensitive documents developed my sense of professionalism and attention to detail. I also had the opportunity to work within the Free Legal Services Unit where I gained hands-on legal experience whilst understanding the importance of pro bono work– something which was very relative to my degree, and I found incredibly interesting.

As I now near the end of my summer internship, I’m excited to share that I’ve been offered the opportunity to stay on beyond my original contract. Being asked to continue in the role is a real vote of confidence in the work I’ve done so far, and I’m so grateful to be able to keep learning and contributing.

To anyone thinking about applying to the Saltire Scholars Programme - I couldn’t recommend it enough! Whether you're unsure about your next steps or looking to grow professionally, the opportunities available can open new doors and the experience you take-away will positively contribute when working towards your career goals.
