My ten weeks this summer working as a Performance Improvement Intern with Network Rail.

During my time at Network Rail, I was able to develop my creative thinking, problem-solving and data analysis skills. As I encountered different challenges faced by the railway, I helped to identify and design forms of intervention. I met with lots of people across the various departments of Scotland’s Railway, which helped me strengthen my confidence in communication, liaison, and presenting to groups of people. Overall, the Saltire Scholar experience has been a great opportunity to gain professional experience as part of a community, supported by my fellow Scholars, my line manager at Network Rail, and the Saltire Scholar team. Additionally, being at Network Rail gave me some amazing opportunities to experience first-hand, Scotland’s railway industry, with a trip up the Forth Rail Bridge, a tour of Glasgow Central Station, and going out on task with the Air Operations team! As I now go into my final year at university, I feel more certain of my abilities to tackle challenges I might face in the world of work and I’m keen to keep finding opportunities for innovation when problem-solving.
