My name is Lydia Hughes, and I study Immunology and Pharmacology at the University of Strathclyde. I applied to the Saltire Scholars Programme because I wanted to challenge myself in a completely new environment and become part of the inspiring community that Entrepreneurial Scotland has created.
My internship with Network Rail has been a truly transformative experience. Coming from a science background, I initially felt apprehensive about working in the railway industry and questioned whether I had the right skills and knowledge to succeed. However, I quickly discovered that many of the skills developed through my studies, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, were highly transferable and could be applied effectively within the business.
I have been based within the Performance Team, which is responsible for understanding the causes of delays and identifying solutions to improve train performance for customers. My main project focused on developing a series of commitments aimed at driving cultural improvements in performance, rather than solely concentrating on asset-based changes. These commitments covered key themes including colleague engagement, incident recovery, the adoption of modern technology, and strengthening collaboration between Network Rail and train operating companies. Through this work, I had the opportunity to engage with colleagues from across the organisation, which gave me valuable insight into how different teams work together to deliver a safe and reliable railway.
Alongside my project work, I was fortunate to take part in a variety of experiences that broadened my understanding of the industry. These included a tour of the West of Scotland Signalling Centre, a training day at Larbert Training Centre, and a volunteering day on the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, where I helped replace railway sleepers. These experiences provided invaluable opportunities to see first-hand the people, processes, and infrastructure that keep the railway moving.
This internship has been an incredible opportunity for both personal and professional growth. While it challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, I felt consistently supported by my team and line manager throughout the experience. The key lessons I will take forward are a deeper appreciation of workplace culture, the importance of cross-functional collaboration, and a greater understanding of the complexities involved in managing large-scale projects. I have also greatly enjoyed connecting with fellow Network Rail interns and learning how their roles contribute to the wider success of the organisation.
For me, being a Saltire Scholar has been a journey of growth, challenge, and discovery. It has pushed me to develop new skills, build confidence in my abilities, and broaden my perspective on potential career paths. As I prepare to enter my fourth year at university, I do so with greater self-belief and a stronger understanding of the professional world. I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone considering the Saltire Scholars Programme to apply.
