Hi, I’m Oscar, and I’m going into my fourth year of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. I applied for the Saltire Scholars Programme in the hope of developing my skillset on a professional and personal level, contributing meaningful work, and making valuable industry connections. And the experience not only met but truly surpassed all expectations.
Over the past summer, I was lucky enough to work at Framatome as an Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering Intern in Pickering, Canada. The Pickering office focuses on design, which gave me exposure to a wide range of solutions being implemented at Pickering Nuclear Plant. These included HVAC machines designed to cool essential safety equipment, voltage adjustments for long sections of cabling, and vibration monitoring probes for the pumps and motors that control the plant’s reactivity.
Having always been interested in electrical and electronic projects, this internship allowed me to apply and expand these skills further in a professional environment. I quickly realised how essential clear communication is within the nuclear industry for both safety and efficiency. Participating in design meetings with external companies allowed me to strengthen my communication skills and gain confidence in contributing to technical discussions.
Framatome also places a strong emphasis on company culture, and I loved taking part in their activities. Over the 12 weeks, I joined in on a golf tournament, a sports day, a board game night, and a barbecue — all of which helped me bond with the team. One of the highlights of my internship was a guided tour of the plant, giving me a deep and unique understanding of how some of the world’s most powerful technology operates efficiently and, most importantly, safely.
Through the Saltire Scholars events, I was able to connect with experts from a wide range of industries and gain fascinating insight into their journeys to success. The Saltire Foundation also provided outstanding support throughout. Perhaps most importantly, I built lasting friendships with other Saltire Scholars in Canada, and I’m excited to reconnect with many of them back in Scotland.
Overall, the experience has improved my confidence enormously and helped me make the decision to pursue employment after my fourth year at university. It was an unforgettable summer, and I’d encourage anyone considering the Saltire Scholars Programme to take the leap. I’m truly grateful for what it’s done for me, and I hope it continues to do the same - and even more – for future Saltire Scholars.
