As my 10-week summer internship at GSK Montrose has come to an end, I’m reflecting on an experience that has been truly transformative-both professionally and personally.
Initially, I was hesitant to apply for a placement a distance from home. But, with a little encouragement from my mum (“just go for it!”), I took the leap-and I’m so glad I did. Not only did I grow in confidence and independence, but I also built meaningful connections with the three other Saltire Scholars based in Montrose. We embraced the local lifestyle-joining the running club through a GSK connection and making the most of the beautiful beachside location.
Coming into such a globally renowned organisation, I expected interns to be at the bottom of the food chain. I was quickly proven wrong. From day one, I was trusted to take ownership of my project, with support always available when I needed it. It was a very welcoming atmosphere with very kind individuals.
As the Smart Manufacturing Engagement Lead Intern, my role was to drive engagement and close the feedback loop between the Smart Manufacturing team and the wider site. I developed a Live Project Progress Tracker in Microsoft Power BI-an interactive tool now live across departments, providing real-time visibility into ongoing initiatives. I also created a Central Hub using Power Apps to streamline access to tools, training, and resources, which has been implemented as the new site homepage.
In particular, I feel my presentation skills have flourished as I regularly presented Smart Manufacturing updates-including to the Site Leadership Team and Site Director, which hugely boosted my confidence and skills in creating effective slide decks.
My one piece of advice for future Saltire Scholars is to leave with no regrets, just dive straight in because this experience is not one to be missed!
In short-this internship exceeded my expectations. I’ve gained technical skills, grown personally, and had the privilege of working with genuinely supportive people. Furthermore, having exposure to inspiring leaders through our GSK leadership week which rounded off our time at the company. Leaving us with invaluable connections for the future. Thank you to everyone at GSK Montrose who made this summer so memorable!
I owe a huge thank you to Entrepreneurial Scotland for funding my internship and giving me the opportunity to kickstart my career. This programme has provided an invaluable insight into the real world of industry, and I couldn’t be more grateful. It’s been a transformative experience that has equipped me with the skills, confidence, and network to take my next steps.
