Hello, my name is Skye and I’m a final year Neuroscience student at the University of St Andrews. This summer, I worked with Concinnity Genetics as a Marketing & Scientific Communications Intern through the Saltire Scholars Programme. I applied because I wanted to explore the business side of science. Most of my studies have focused on research, and I was curious about how ideas in biotechnology make their way out of the lab and into the real world. Concinnity gave me the chance to see that process in action.
Concinnity Genetics is a biotech company developing RNA control systems for gene therapies. Over the summer, I worked on a variety of projects: building a CRM, mapping potential partners, developing pitch decks for scientific and investor audiences, and researching the biotech and gene therapy landscape. Each task gave me a different perspective on how Concinnity is positioning its technology in such a fast-moving industry. A highlight was contributing to pitch materials, where I learned how to take complex scientific data and present it in a way that resonated with both researchers and investors.
This internship gave me an insight into science beyond academia and a much clearer view of the bigger picture. At university, science is often focused on experiments and results, but at Concinnity I saw how those results fit into a wider journey of strategy, communication, partnerships, and funding to bring technology into real-world use.
I’m really thankful to everyone at Concinnity and the Saltire team for their support. I’ve built useful skills in research and communication, and the experience has helped me feel more confident about sharing my ideas and looking ahead to new opportunities.
