Thomas Aggleton, Finance Intern, Norty

Business Management Student, The University of Dundee

As a Finance Intern, my main project and responsibilities will be helping and learning from the finance team on their day to day and long-term projects. My main goals are learning the most I can about the different software they use and getting firsthand experience of working in finance. I have settled in well to the company and in my role. We were able to go round and meet each department on the first day which made it easier to get to meet new people.

My projects that I have been set by my manager, which includes looking into investments and funds that the company can invest their money into to gain a higher return than they do with their current investments. To do this I conducted intense research along with meetings with treasury managers and CFO’s of different companies, this allowed me to understand more about the investment areas I was researching.

Along with researching different areas the company could invest in, I have looked into and had meetings with an invoicing software company which can automate the invoicing process. I have created a report on this and listed the benefits it could have on the company short term and long term. The impact of these projects can increase the efficiency of the billing process in the company, along with in the long run saving the company time and money.

Conducting meetings with external people to get advice on what I’ve been doing has been beneficial to the project I’m working on and myself personally. I have received feedback that they are happy with my performance and to keep doing what I am doing, this gave me more confidence with my tasks.

I presented my project to my manager and she gave me feedback which was good as I need to present to the Senior Leadership Team and Managing Director at the end of August. This gave me insight into what I need to add to my presentation and what she was happy with. Hearing her feedback gave me more confidence in what I was doing.

The most rewarding parts of my internship have been completing tasks set by my manager along with volunteering with the soup kitchen that the company volunteers two employees every week to go and serve soup to the local community. I have never volunteered in a soup kitchen it was a nice, rewarding experience that I will certainly do again.

Overall I am happy with my progress and performance at Norty, I think I have accomplished more than I expected I would have before the internship began. It has given me a lot of ‘real life experience’ in a workplace environment, which will help me a lot further down my career.
