Walid, a Robotics, Autonomous and Interactive Systems Student at Heriot Watt University shares his experience as a Electrical & Electronics Engineering Intern at Verlume LTD.
Summer Internship at Verlume Ltd: A journey of growth and achievement
Starting my summer internship at Verlume LTD was both exciting and daunting. As an Electrical & Electronics Engineering intern, I was eager to apply my academic knowledge to real-world projects. The initial weeks were focused on understanding the company’s operations and familiarising myself with the team. One of my first tasks was to assist in developing Simulink models for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This was a significant challenge as I had a very limited experience with Simulink. However, with guidance from my mentors and after completing many online courses available on the MathWorks website, I quickly grasped the basics and began contributing to the project.
By the midpoint of my internship, I had gained considerable confidence in my abilities, especially after completing the Simulink Onramp course. I was actively involved in the BESS project, where I developed and tested several Simulink models. One of my notable achievements was building Simulink models to measure the efficiency input and output along with the power factor model of the BESS’s Transformer block. I was also asked to make a Simulink model for the Rectifier block. This experience not only enhanced my technical skills but also taught me the importance of teamwork and effective communication. Collaborating with senior engineers and participating in team meetings helped me understand the value of diverse perspectives and the power of collective problem-solving.
As my internship drew to a close, I took time to reflect on my journey. The experience at Verlume LTD had a profound impact on me, both professionally and personally. On a skill level, I became proficient in Simulink and gained hands-on experience for designing Simulink models for BESS, which is crucial for my future career in renewable energy. Personally, I developed resilience and adaptability, learning to navigate challenges and embrace continuous learning. This internship has solidified my passion for electrical engineering and renewable energy, and I am now more determined than ever to pursue a career in this field.
To future students considering an internship, I wholeheartedly encourage you to apply. This program offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, learn from industry experts, and grow both professionally and personally. My time at Verlume LTD has been transformative, and I am confident it will be equally rewarding for you. Embrace the challenges, stay curious, and make the most of every opportunity. Your journey at Verlume LTD will undoubtedly be a stepping stone to a successful and fulfilling career.
