Electronic & Electrical Engineering in the Construction Industry.

This summer, my Saltire Internship was with the Electrical IC&I Estimation team at Black & McDonald in Toronto, Canada. The main aim for this internship was to assess my career ambitions and if electrical construction fits in with that plan.

My internship at B&M, was a gradual introduction to the industry, with tasks given to me to assess my knowledge but also improve my understanding of their processes and methods. I was afforded the flexibility of tailoring elements of the experience to areas I was interested in. Additionally, I was able to get involved in multiple aspects of construction outside of my role as an intern and had the opportunity to go out on site. This allowed me to showcase my skills, such as identifying potential issues in project plans and pinch points on site. I've also helped support a busy Estimation Department and assisted members of the team to develop accurate project cost estimates for bids.

This internship has been incredible for my personal development. Seeing what is possible for me was eye-opening. B&M has a large focus on employee development, particularly the independent application of things learned at university. There is a mentor system in place and the opportunity to take several Harvard Business School courses.

The key lesson I learned here is that planning can make or break a project. Similarly, an initial design is extremely useful to identify the project's practicalities. This internship has helped shape my career and reinforced that I want to be involved in project management for both electrical design and construction.

The best part about this summer has been the people. Everyone from my fellow Saltire Scholars to my co-workers at B&M have been great. You become part of a network of incredible people that want to see you succeed.

Looking back over my time at Black & McDonald, I've noticed a few personal changes, and I have also developed massively over such a relatively short timeframe.

I've become better at communicating more concisely and accurately. I am also more aware of what a good electrical design is and how to make sure something can be built. I've been pushed to be more confident and take more chances - you get out of it what you put into it.

This opportunity has 100% been worth it. It is a super unique programme, particularly the accessibility offered by having your visa, accommodation, transport to another continent, and insurance covered.

Overall, the end of the internship has been bittersweet. I said goodbye to the other interns in Toronto, and I have a few weeks on my own before I go home to graduate. I'm excited for the next phase of my life. I feel more confident thanks to this internship and all in all, I couldn't recommend the programme more!
