Jamie Pearson

2023 Saltire Scholar

Marketing Intern, Stop & Shop, USA

From Paisley to Boston!

Jamie Pearson, a Business and Marketing Student from the University of the West of Scotland, took a leap across the Atlantic to join Stop & Shop as a Marketing Intern through the Saltire Scholars Programme. Through his internship, Jamie gained valuable professional experience in the world of marketing, gained a deeper appreciation for the third sector and corporate social responsibility, all whilst exploring a new culture in the States.

The Internship

As a Marketing Intern, Jamie’s time with Stop & Shop was dynamic and engaging. Throughout the summer, Jamie worked closely with various teams across the organisation, developing a variety of experience in the world of marketing from communications, competitor analysis, brand development and marketing strategy.

Jamie’s main project during the internship was to conceptualise a marketing campaign and event that aligned with Stop & Shop’s focus on community and charitable giving. By the end of the internship, Jamie developed a CSR-focused campaign and omni-channel strategy to promote Stop & Shop’s School Food Pantry Program and Fight School Hunger campaign and pitched it to Stop & Shop’s directors.

A highlight of Jamie’s internship was his involvement in brand development by planning customised store grand openings for diverse markets such as Queens, NY and Jamaica Plain, MA, ensuring that each event resonated with local customers.

Jamie also played a key role in strengthening community relations across five states by participating in charitable giving and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

In addition, Jamie conducted an in-depth competitor analysis, providing valuable insights to enhance Stop & Shop’s community outreach and hiring strategies.

Impact

Jamie’s internship had a lasting impact on his personal and professional development.

“My internship gave me a better sense of the career direction I want to pursue after university, something I wasn’t sure of before, It also boosted my confidence, both professionally and in everyday life.”

Through the Saltire Scholars Programme, Jamie gained practical marketing experience and developed skills such as strategic thinking, project management, and effective communication. He also discovered a newfound appreciation for giving back to the community, inspired by Stop & Shop’s commitment to charitable efforts. Since his internship, Jamie has joined Centre Stage and We Make Kilmarnock as a Communications Officer, providing strategic communications and marketing support that addresses social challenges and community development.

Personally, the internship enabled Jamie to network and make new connections. As part of the internship, Jamie lived with 6 other Saltire Scholars in Boston and created lifelong friendships. During their spare time, the group took advantage of their time in the USA and toured Massachusetts and other parts of the USA, taking in a new culture and new experiences.
