The story of Scottish Leather Group is one of constant evolution.
Nicholas Muirhead is the eighth generation of the Muirhead family to work within the leather industry, with the family's involvement dating back to 1758. Across nine generations, the business has adapted repeatedly to changing markets and customer demands.
From producing tennis glove leather in the nineteenth century to becoming a leading supplier of fine automotive and aviation leather, Scottish Leather Group has continually evolved its products, operations and strategy.
Today, that same mindset is driving investment into new opportunities, including bovine-derived collagen and other advanced materials.
For members, it was a powerful reminder that long-term success is rarely achieved by standing still.
One of the strongest themes from the visit was the importance of continual reinvention.
Scottish Leather Group's history demonstrates that long-term success is not about preserving the status quo. Over the centuries, the business has evolved from producing tennis glove leather to supplying premium automotive and aviation leather, and is now investing in bovine-derived collagen and other advanced materials.
For members, it was a powerful reminder that successful businesses don't stand still. They continually adapt to changing markets, technologies and customer needs.

For a business of its scale and heritage, one of the most surprising takeaways was its agility.
Despite employing more than 750 people and operating globally, Scottish Leather Group continues to pivot, innovate and explore new opportunities. Members heard how the business remains focused on identifying what's next rather than relying on what's worked before.
It was a valuable reminder that growth doesn't have to come at the expense of adaptability.

Innovation is deeply embedded within Scottish Leather Group's culture.
Members heard how the business encourages experimentation and understands that innovation inevitably involves risk. Rather than fearing failure, the organisation creates an environment where new ideas can be explored and tested.
For many leaders, this served as a valuable reminder that innovation rarely comes from playing it safe. Creating the conditions for creativity to flourish is often just as important as the ideas themselves.

With the Muirhead family's involvement in the leather industry stretching back to 1758, there was a strong sense of stewardship throughout the discussion.
Now the eighth generation of the family to work in the industry, Nicholas Muirhead shared the responsibility of leading a business with such a rich history while continuing to evolve it for future generations.
For members, it highlighted an important leadership lesson: balancing respect for what has come before with the courage to keep moving forward.
