ES: Tell us about MM Search - what do you do?

K.M: “MM Search specialise in Executive Search, Executive Interim and Non-Executive Director positions, their process is streamlined, simple and innovative.

MM Search works across all sectors and disciplines with companies of all sizes, operating throughout the UK and internationally.”

E.S: As a business leader, what have been some of the major challenges during the past year or so?

K.M: “Over the past year, we have continued to talk and operate in the language that suits our clients best - we value digital technology and online video platforms in our recruitment process, but this doesn't take away from the human and personal touch that we put on every client relationship.”

E.S: What have been the major successes of this period of time?

K.M: “In 2020, we launched an interim resourcing function for businesses seeking senior-level expertise on a contract basis. The fallout from Covid, advances in technology, the increase in home-based working, plus the ever-present mounting pressures on businesses to reduce costs and increase performance are all factors that have redefined the interim management function. We now offer this service to clients, and it is a growing arm of our business.

We launched a complimentary Non-Executive Director Academy within the first 18 months of our business, supported by Sir Harry Burns (former chief medical officer) and Julie Ashworth. The Academy has offered a range of in-person and, latterly, digital events. Our guest speakers have talked first-hand about their experience as Non-Executive Director and provided hours of free tutorials to our members.

We also launched a podcast during the lockdown, "Rules of Leadership", a series that interviews inspiring and engaging business leaders across a wide range of sectors."

E.S: Are there any particular goals that MM Search has set for the next few years?

K.M: "From the outset, we wanted to offer a challenger brand to the typical search model; ripping up the rule book is one of our favourite sayings!

Our point of difference being market knowledge, excellent delivery, and unrivalled levels of client service. Our process is streamlined, straightforward and innovative and above all, honest and approachable. We help hire the dream team for our clients, and we thrive on this challenge.

We've not reached THE goal of being the most sought-after executive firm in the UK (yet)… but we would like to think we are well on our way to making it a reality."

E.S: You recently completed the Entrepreneurial Scotland Conscious Leadership catalyst programme — what was the biggest learning/takeaway of the programme to you as an entrepreneurial leader? Was there a moment that stood out to you?

K.M: “I joined the Saltire Leaders Catalyst programme "Conscious Leadership" at the start of June 2020, the course aims to teach the fundamental concepts, methods, and tools of innovation, growth and conscious leadership. The programme has been designed to bring global perspective and international insight into the continuing professional development of business leaders in Scotland. Something I have genuinely relished!

Initially, I was drawn to the conscious leadership course because it offers unique immersion in a challenging and action-orientated entrepreneurial culture. But it has given me so much more."

E.S: What can be learned from peers that you can't learn on your own, or from a college?

K.M: “The collective experience and other tales of leadership and team organisation are crucial to unlocking your opportunity. Sharing knowledge is vital!"

E.S: Do you believe there is a winning formula for becoming a successful entrepreneur? What's yours?

K.M: “Attitude and action are the key traits to purposeful people and business leaders that want to make a difference. Can this be taught or is it inherent – there is perhaps a big mix of the two.

Passion and resilience combined with work ethic are also important for any entrepreneur.'

E.S: What are some of the mistakes you wished you could have avoided?

K.M: “At times we all fall foul to not believing in ourselves, or assuming the challenge is too big or thinking too big from the outset. I am not complacent, certainly not a know-it-all; if I don't 'get it, I ask! I am very fortunate to be surrounded by non-Exec directors who help steer and support and help us learn from our mistakes."

E.S: Do you have any tips you would now give yourself for when you first started in business?

K.M: “Have the confidence to stick to your guns and execute your ideas, but also learn from your mistakes quickly. You should always surround yourself with top calibre individuals within your team and also a board of directors.

I know that I can't do it all, which is why I have sought out expertise and built a board of directors that challenge, inspire and support my vision. Many think a board of directors at such a young age and stage (of the business) isn't necessary, but I challenge that viewpoint – without the outside expertise rallying for our success, it would be hard to see the potential”

E.S: As a member of the ES Community, what do you feel is the biggest benefit and value gained?

K.M: “I am proud to be part of Scotland's community of leaders looking to develop in conscious leadership and to work alongside those who are unapologetic about their desire to do well and do good. The benefits and value I have taken from the community include:

  • Access to key speakers and the opportunity to take part in events and seminars across the globe
  • It can be lonely leading a business, but the ES community has provided the opportunity to rub shoulders with likeminded business leaders who are also going through the same challenges and opportunities."

E.S: When you're looking for new talent in the business, what are the most important qualities that you look for?

K.M: Attitude, action, and personality. As a people-focused business, our company is built on those who contribute to it. Work ethic and confidence are key! And those that are prepared to go that extra mile.

ES: You've recently hosted two Saltire Scholar interns as part of the 2021 internship programme, what has been the value/benefit to MM Search by embracing fresh, entrepreneurially minded student talent?

K.M: The Saltire Scholar internship programme is a fantastic chance for students to undertake an internship with burgeoning businesses, and we are privileged to be one of those. We also took huge value from their attitude, approach, and insights into every task – we welcomed the fresh perspective.

We offered a fully immersive experience for students, allowing them to hit the ground running and see, and be part of, all sides of an entrepreneurial business. The tangible experience gave them an insight into the industry, and we hope a taste for the future. Ultimately, internships are a vital way to unlock future talent and working in the headhunting industry this is always front of mind.

I am proud to be part of Scotland's community of leaders looking to develop in conscious leadership and to work alongside those who are unapologetic about their desire to do well and do good.
